Off-White Takeover

We have always believed that interiors are not only the backdrop to life, but also the foundation to civility. We also believe that design is deeply connected to all aspects of culture, from food and art to politics and fashion, so we were excited to see Off-White Vancouver chose to stage a photoshoot in our recent office build-out for real estate company Hudson Pacific Properties.

Virgil Abloh is often thought of as the most prolific designer of his generation. His trajectory to the fashion world is interesting: he originally graduated with a civil engineering degree, continued on to do his master’s degree in architecture, and then found his way into interning at fashion powerhouse Fendi. From there he went on to take the title of Creative Director for his good friend and intern colleague Kanye West (which seemingly sparked the trend in rappers outsourcing art direction) before starting his own label: Off-White.

Off-White’s signature design aesthetic is centred around diagonal lines and the iconography of American cities, tying in his knowledge of architectural intricacies and intersecting them with the fashion world. This marriage of disciplines and interests resonates deeply with McKinley Studios and our integrated collaborative approach to design.

Selecting a backdrop for a photoshoot can be pivotal in adding personality and style to a campaign. In developing the interiors for Hudson Pacific’s new office in downtown Vancouver, we became more and more convinced that the hybrid workplace of our future offices will play important roles of identity, community, collaboration, and engagement. Offices will have the unique ability to bring us together, both physically and metaphorically. It will start to look like many things - hotel lounge, wellness centre, entertainment venue, collaboration incubator, and yes, even a fashion backdrop.
